Support Ocean Conservation this June at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu

With the month of June full of green events like World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8), and as travellers seek more sustainable ways to experience the world, local resort brand Coco Collection is offering their guests chances to actively support ocean conservation while on holiday.

Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, carries out several sustainability initiatives that guests can participate in:

Coral restoration projects, led by the in-house marine biologist to regenerate local reef ecosystems. Guests can sponsor coral frames and learn how coral gardening works first-hand.

Sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation, hosted at the Maldives’ first veterinarian- run turtle rescue centre in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project. Guests can visit the centre, watch turtle feedings, and even register in advance to volunteer at the centre.

Turtle hatching monitoring, where carefully protected nests are observed until hatchlings can be safely guided back to the ocean as per the guidelines of the Maldivian Environmental Protection Agency.

Guided snorkelling and diving in Baa Atoll’s vibrant marine ecosystem, home to tropical fish, coral gardens, and sea turtles.

Following World Turtle Day on May 23, the resort is also marking the start of turtle hatching season. Guests are invited to attend weekly marine talks and actively participate in conservation experiences that deepen understanding and connection to the ocean.

In 2024, the Olive Ridley Project’s Maldives Research team world-wide recorded 168 new turtle nests, over 5,264 successful hatchings, nearly 3,500 turtle sightings, and surpassed a milestone of 40,000 sea turtle encounters recorded since 2013, with Coco Collection associates logging the highest number of turtle encounters in the country.

This June, the resort will be hosting a roundup of sustainable travel experiences involving both their guests and associates. This includes Tree Planting, Saifodhu (a Maldivian high tea) with an exhibit of homemade products, a sustainable dinner experience, a sustainability presentation led by the resort’s Marine Educator & Olive Ridley Project (ORP) team, and more for World Environment Day. Additionally, for World Oceans Day the island is set to lead various sustainability-focused experiences as well.

Whether the guest is a nature enthusiast, an aspiring conservationist, or simply in search of an eco-retreat, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
