Alila Kothaifaru is a hidden gem in the Maldives, part of the Hyatt Group and is a five-star retreat and a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The journey starts when guests board a seaplane, landing right next to the breathtaking house reef in the serene Raa Atoll. Once they arrive, they can feel the soft, white sands between their toes and explore the wellness offerings available, immersing themselves in the island’s natural beauty that rejuvenates the spirit through its luxurious spa services.

The signature treetop spa has recently launched its detox programme – a transformative five-night wellness retreat that adopts a scientific and holistic approach to sustainable weight management and overall wellbeing. It integrates Ayurveda with yoga, fitness, holistic massage, therapies, modern medicine, nutrition, and techniques to foster emotional well-being as well as cleanse, restore, and rejuvenate the body and mind.

The programme includes a comprehensive body composition analysis, vital signs check, and a body pH test, as well as personalised consultations from an experienced Ayurvedic doctor and nutritionist who design nutritionally balanced meals with vegetarian options. Guests also undergo an emotional wellness assessment, thoughtfully designed to offer a complete reset.

The Alila concept, born in Bali’s enchanting landscape, stands as a beacon of excellence in Asia. Celebrated for its commitment to wellness, Bali inspires tranquillity and rejuvenation, but Alila Maldives has now been open three years.

Thomas Weber is General Manager, bringing nearly a decade of experience in the Maldives, and a background with Diamond Hotels & Resorts. Thomas, who worked with Hilton for many years, also brings his extensive expertise to enhance the guest experience.

According to Thomas, who hails from the Swiss ski resort Cloisters, “At Alila, we believe in creating transformative experiences. This programme is a reflection of our commitment to holistic wellbeing, combining expert care with the serenity of our natural environment, as The Maldives embodies a traditional wellness and spa culture.”

He observes that current global trends focus on nutrition and mental health, evolving into a more integrated approach that emphasises longevity and quality sleep. Thomas also sees the future as being intertwined with technology, specifically AI. As he explains, “Globally, one of the trends we’re seeing is we now collect health data through electronic means, which AI will likely analyse to provide insights for personalised health plans.” He believes that while technology plays a role, the essence of wellness in the Maldives still relies on human touch and traditional therapies.”

Spending time on a small island fosters a unique connection with nature. Thomas notes that after a week or two in such a serene setting, guests can truly recharge. “The benefits of wellness treatments here are magnified. Being on a remote island allows one to escape pollution and distractions, deepening the relaxation experience.”

He emphasised the positive trend among younger generations prioritising wellness, a practice that was less common in the past. Alila Maldives is adapting its offerings to foster a deeper connection to nature, creating tailored wellness experiences.

Currently, they have introduced a detox program. This retreat encourages guests to engage their senses, with special attention given to the scents and sights of the island, such as the herb garden or the ocean breeze at low tide. The program includes comprehensive health assessments to better understand guests’ needs.

Activities like sunrise snorkeling add to the wellness experience, and they are committed to sustainability and community engagement. Overall, Alila Kothaifaru aims to inspire guests to disconnect, reflect, and reconnect with themselves in a tranquil environment.

“When you are on a small island, you have a deeper connection to nature, it’s not like in a city where you go to a spa for three or four hours, then go back into the busy streets or drive home. It’s encouraging to see that the younger generation looks after themselves, but our generation did not do that, and Switzerland is leading the world in terms of health. Here in the Maldives, we’re moving beyond traditional well-being offerings, which we provide to guests now, with a deeper connection to nature, as we are surrounded by it.”

He said: “We try to assist the guests to experience a holistic wellness week, or well-being week, including all five senses, a whole sensory experience, sensory regeneration.”

Relax and find peace at the treetop spa surrounded by lush trees. Spa Alila at Kothaifaru Maldives offers a unique spa experience utilising natural ingredients for a pampering treat. Guests can enjoy personalised spa treatments in a calming, modern space, assisted by friendly therapists. Spa Alila uses only handmade products made from pure, natural ingredients. The spa also provides yoga, exercise, and meditation classes to help guests feel refreshed. Healthy food and self-care tips are available to support overall well-being. The spa’s warm and inviting atmosphere, along with soothing scents, sets the mood for relaxation. The treatment menu combines Asian and Western techniques, featuring a selection of natural ingredients. Guests can choose from various massage options, including deep tissue, relaxing, nurturing, and a special pregnancy massage designed for mothers-to-be. In addition to customisable treatments, the spa offers facials, body scrubs, manicures, and pedicures. Spa Alila takes pride in using nurturing techniques that have been passed down through generations, calming both the body and mind. Guests can create their spa packages by combining different treatments. Surrounded by nature, Spa Alila features four double treatment suites, each equipped with a private bathroom, shower, and large windows offering stunning views.

Staying at Alila
Alila Kothaifaru has 44 beachfront villas and 36 overwater villas. The overwater villas have a contemporary feel, with white Miami vibes, as opposed to the stilted and thatched roofs of the Maldives’ more traditional resorts.
